How to Earn Free flights to Europe in 12-18 Months
How to Earn Free Flights
to Europe in 12–18 Months
Using Just One Credit Card
There are many ways to earn free flights. This is just one of them — and it works entirely on spending you're already doing.
"Every time I come home from overseas travel I do the math. And every time, the math makes the same argument: Europe is not the expensive trip. The airfare is the hurdle — and there are ways around it."
Before we start: There are many legitimate strategies for earning free flights — credit card points, airline miles, travel portals, transfer partners, and more. This guide covers just one of them: the American Airlines AAdvantage credit card + shopping portal system. It is not financial advice. Always read the card terms and pay your balance in full every month.
This strategy works best if you are already spending $2,000 or more per month on everyday life — and routing all of it through one rewards card. Here's what counts:
Rent (some landlords accept card payments — check yours) · Groceries · Gas · Electric & utilities · Phone & internet · Streaming subscriptions · Dining out · Birthday & holiday gifts · Clothing & shoes · Insurance premiums · Home repairs & supplies · Car maintenance · Medical copays · Amazon orders · Online shopping of any kind · Hotel rooms & vacation rentals (Expedia, Airbnb, Booking.com — these are often your single largest transactions of the year)
If you spend closer to $1,000–1,500 per month, this still works — it just takes 15–18 months instead of 12. The strategy is exactly the same.
The foundation of this strategy is the Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard. It currently offers a welcome bonus of 50,000 miles after you spend $2,500 in the first three months. That single bonus is often enough for a complete round-trip flight to Europe in economy during off-peak season.
2x miles on American Airlines purchases, restaurants, and gas stations. 1 mile per $1 on everything else. Plus the 50,000-mile welcome bonus — the biggest single earning event of your year.
The oneworld Alliance — Your Miles Work on 15 Airlines
American Airlines is a founding member of the oneworld Alliance. As of 2026 the alliance has 15 full member airlines — your AAdvantage miles can book seats on all of them, and your status is recognized across the entire network.
Before you spend a single dollar, register for these three free programs. They each layer additional miles on top of your card's base earn rate — simultaneously — without costing you anything extra.
All three are completely free to join and take about 15 minutes to set up. The browser extension is the most powerful passive tool — once it's installed, it reminds you every time you're shopping online at a site that earns bonus miles.
Once all three tools are active, you can stack all three earning layers on a single purchase. This is where the math starts to get genuinely exciting.
Compare that to the same $200 purchase made with a regular debit card: zero miles. This is not extra spending. It's the same purchase, redirected.
Before any online purchase: (1) Check the shopping portal for the retailer. (2) Check SimplyMiles for an offer. Activate it. (3) Pay with your AAdvantage Mastercard. That's it. When both portal and SimplyMiles are available on the same retailer, combined earn rates frequently hit 7–10+ miles per dollar.
The shopping portal doesn't earn at a flat rate — it spikes dramatically around holidays and promotional events. Knowing when to shop through the portal is as important as knowing how.
Florists (FTD, 1-800-Flowers), department stores, jewelry retailers, and spa gift cards all hit 10–15x during these windows. Run the triple dip on every gift purchase.
July–August: clothing, shoes, electronics, and school supplies. Portal rates at Target, Kohl's, Nike, and Best Buy typically run 3–8x during back-to-school season.
Home Depot, Lowe's, and home furnishing stores run elevated rates in September–October. Start portal shopping for holiday gifts in November before rates peak.
The single biggest earning window of the year. Portal rates at major retailers surge to 5–20x. $1,000 in holiday shopping at an average of 10x = 10,000 miles in one weekend.
AAdvantage regularly runs 2x and 3x bonus mile promotions throughout December on the eShopping portal. Watch your email — these announcements come as promotional emails from AAdvantage. Activate everything before you shop. Holiday shopping through the portal with a 3x promotion running on top of an already-elevated retailer rate can generate 13,000–15,000+ miles in December alone.
Book Your European Hotel on Expedia
During the Black Friday Sale
This is the single highest-value transaction of the entire year — and almost nobody thinks to do it. Your European hotel or Airbnb is likely your largest single purchase of the trip, often $800–2,000+. If you book it through Expedia during the Black Friday sale using your AAdvantage Mastercard, you are stacking four earning layers simultaneously on one booking.
And if Expedia happens to appear in your SimplyMiles offers that week — which it sometimes does — that's a fifth layer on a single transaction. A $1,500 hotel booking through the portal at even 5x earns 7,500 miles from that one purchase alone, on top of the discounted rate and Expedia points.
Pro tip: Build your Expedia tier status by consistently booking hotels through them throughout the year — VIP status unlocks free room upgrades, free breakfast, and exclusive discounts that compound the savings even further.
Here is exactly what happens over 12 months, assuming $2,000/month in household spending redirected through this system.
Your card arrives. Your only job: get to $833 in spending (one-third of the $2,500 minimum). Put every possible recurring charge on this card immediately — subscriptions, utilities, phone bill, insurance autopay.
Continue spending toward the $2,500 threshold. Check the shopping portal before every online purchase. Check SimplyMiles weekly — new offers rotate in and must be activated before purchase.
You've hit $2,500 in spending. The 50,000 welcome bonus miles post to your AAdvantage account — typically within 8–10 weeks of hitting the threshold. This single moment puts you more than halfway to two round trips to Europe. The strategy now shifts from sprint to steady accumulation.
Your goal from here is simple: never spend a dollar without asking whether there is a portal, SimplyMiles offer, or dining reward to stack on it. The browser extension handles online shopping automatically. For in-store, open SimplyMiles before you leave the house.
Summer is typically peak spending for most households — vacations, entertaining, home projects, back to school. Every dollar flows through your card and portals. The eShopping portal runs elevated summer promotions at major retailers.
You now have a meaningful balance. Start searching AA.com for award availability to Europe for the dates you're targeting — 4–6 months out from now. Use the calendar view to find low-rate dates shown in green. Off-peak windows (January through March and September through November) consistently show the lowest mile requirements.
October through December is when the portal earns maximum returns. Every holiday gift, every Black Friday purchase, every Cyber Monday deal should route through the AAdvantage eShopping portal. This is not the time to buy directly from a retailer's website. Every purchase goes through the portal first.
By month 12, most households following this system will have accumulated 95,000–110,000 miles. A round trip for two to Europe in off-peak economy requires approximately 76,000–80,000 miles. You have more than enough — with miles left over for the next trip.
Not all award bookings are equal. American Airlines' oneworld partners price the same routes differently — and some come with drastically lower fuel surcharges. For a trip to Europe, this difference can be hundreds of dollars.
| Airline | Miles One-Way (Economy) | Fees | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| American Airlines (direct) | ~19,000–25,000 | From $5.60 | Best overall |
| Iberia | ~22,000 | ~$55 each way | Low fees |
| Finnair | ~22,000 | Moderate | Solid option |
| Aer Lingus | ~22,000 | Low–moderate | Via Dublin |
| British Airways | ~22,000+ | Up to $700+ | Search only — don't book |
British Airways' website (ba.com) often shows American Airlines award seats that AA's own website doesn't display. Search on ba.com to find the best availability. Then go to AA.com and book the same flight using your AAdvantage miles — this way you access the inventory BA found, but avoid BA's enormous fuel surcharges.
January through early March and September through mid-November are consistently the lowest-rate windows. Award seats are more available, mile costs are lower, and you'll have beautiful weather in Italy and the rest of southern Europe during both shoulder seasons.
Being able to fly ±3 days on either side of your ideal date can mean the difference between 19,000 miles and 40,000 miles for the same flight. Use the calendar view on AA.com — green dates are always worth checking even if they're not your first choice.
Here is every earning source, conservatively estimated for a household spending $2,000/month redirected through this system. You are not spending more — you are routing what you already spend through channels that earn miles.

What 118,500 Miles Gets You
Two seats to Europe — covered. With 42,500 miles left over to start building toward the next destination. That's nearly enough for another one-way transatlantic flight before you've spent a single new dollar.
Even if you decide this particular credit card strategy isn't right for you, there are free tools that anyone can use to find cheaper flights to Europe.
The Airfare Was Always
the Only Real Hurdle
When you account for free daily breakfast, affordable restaurants, walkable cities, and trains that replace expensive flights — the only meaningful variable in European travel versus American travel is getting there. This is one way to clear it. Now you know how.

Interest charges will cost more than the miles are worth. Always read the card terms before applying. Miles values and earn rates are accurate as of 2026 and subject to change.
